Log Tech

December 11, 2008

The technology has been around for centuries, and is still natural and beautiful and warm.  Log cabins, log houses, log homes.  Here’s a luxurious example, created by masters of the craft.

Yankee Screwdriver, Classic Tech

March 18, 2008

You have your lithium battery drilldriver, your mini cordless screwdriver, and your humungo horsepower corded drill, and an assortment of hand screwdrivers.

But for elegance, simplicity, and dependability, there’s nothing like an old-fashioned Yankee screwdriver.

Isomax Contractor Push Pull Yankee Type Screwdriver-Drill

Fit a drillbit or bolt or screw into the slot. Line it up, make sure the switch is flipped the right way, push the handle toward the drill bit, and the pressure of your pushing will turn the rachet, rotating the drillbit and drilling the wood.

To remove a bolt or screw, flip the switch the other way, and your pushing will now cause a counterclockwise movement to remove it.

If the power goes out, you forget the batteries, you don’t want to make a racket, or you just like clever and well crafted tools, this one is very cool.

Classic tech–the wood plane

February 18, 2008

It’s old, it’s not electronic, it’s not even mechanical, but if you need to prepare tree-grown boards, even for something as simple as a bookcase, a well made and well sharpened plane is a joy to use.

There is nothing like the bite of the plane into wood, the wood smell, and the curl of the shavings.

The key to using a wood plane successfully is to make sure the blade is very sharp. It’s also important to not set the blade any deeper than necessary. Better to take off multiple small shavings than to struggle and gouge with a cut that’s too deep.
